Apples, Divine

In no way am I ready for the cold of winter, but I have to say I'm very much appreciating its precursor, Fall.  Or more pointedly, apple season.  Who can resist all those colorful bins of locally grown apples at the store right now?  Not me.  For that reason I can't stop myself from making fresh, warm applesauce for dessert after dinner lately.  It's a Cortland + Macintosh combination right now, but the possibilities are pretty endless.  Turns out the leftovers are great for breakfast too!

So all this talk about apples makes me think of apple divination.  There are countless ways apples have been used for gaining answers and insights for hundreds of years.  From peeling an apple in a single strand and tossing it over your shoulder to see if it remains unbroken, thus forming the first letter of your true love's name, to counting the seeds of your apple to see if you will have an even number for impending good luck or an uneven number for upcoming disappointment, to using it to answer a yes/no question by twisting the stem attached to the apple as you alternate saying "yes, no, yes, no, yes" until the stem breaks off as you are speaking one or the other, thereby revealing the answer to your question... whatever ways you can think to divine with an apple it's likely one of your ancestors has tried it too.

Here's a little apple divination I made up for you with a numerology basis, so next time you slice up your Honeycrisp, Braeburn, or Prairie Spy  you can ask yourself a question beforehand, or just check back for your message.

How many seeds are in your apple?
5 seeds:  It's a good place to start from, or a good time to get started.
Things have been in state of change, so replenish your resources,
be daring and bold...and get gRowing.
6 seeds:  This is a good sign for balance, harmony and cooperation.
Pay attention to he or she you are in harmony with. Love and nurture!
7 seeds:  Spend some time in reflection, surround yourself in music you love.
Then, trust your inner voice and apply what you know in your heart
              to be true.
8 seeds:  Put your inner strength and life experience to work for you.  Have
confidence on the path you're on as you move forward.
9 seeds:  Use your creativity and talents to inspire. Build, make, cook, bake,
draw, paint, knit, grow, share, give. Bless the world with your Self!
10  "    :  Through hardship and challenges we gain strength.  There is an aspect
here of closure, but also one of infinite possibilities.  Be independent
and look for that next opportunity to begin anew!
11  "    :  If you have eleven seeds you probably don't need a message - signs, insights,
inspiration, and clear perspective are everywhere around you right now.
You're on the right track so take it all in and enjoy the amazing energy!
12  "    :  Rely on your spiritual strength and all the wisdom that comes with that.  Be
social and share your optimism and vitality with others right now.
13  "    :  Use your determination. It's time to be serious and practical in your decisions.
Take action and apply yourself...it's going to pay off in great ways down the road.
14  "    :  Today's the day to be spontaneous!  Be active and go explore something new.
More great adventures and transformation are on it's way to you!
15  "    :  You touch those around you with influence greater than you realize, be careful
with this gift.  Use your sense of connection to others to share love and joy...
especially with family, those closest to you, and those "chance meetings" with
people who just need a bright dose of your amazing spirit!
16-20  " (You must be eating a Northern Spy!)  Be unconventional and unique...look
at life from a new perspective and you'll probably be seeing things more
              clearly than ever.

It's all just for fun, but if you come up with an interesting story, validation or synchronicity, be sure to share it in the comments!

Thanksgiving will be here sooner than we know it.  Guess I'll have to be moving from applesauce on to crisps and pies next.
